PostHeaderIcon Can Mangosteen reduce the effect of Nexavar?

I read that Mangosteen might help against Liver Cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), because it has xanthone which has potent cytotoxic effect against hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines. As per: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=12451486&query_hl=1&itool=pubmed_docsum
Mom has HCC and she is on Nexavar, if she takes Magosteen juice can it reduce the effect of Nexavar?
I was bit worried as I read in:
http://www.cancer.org/docroot/ETO/content/ETO_5_3x_Mangosteen_Juice.asp?sitearea=ETO

Because of antioxidant effects, mangosteen supplements might interfere with radiation therapy or chemotherapy, possibly making these treatments less effective.

I think that it’s worth a shot drinking it. I doubt that any drink could have any effect on chemo. I mean, it can’t be that strong. Unless they specifically tell you not to drink that juice, go right ahead.

I would post this question under Health and Diseases. This section is for questions about coffee, tea, and coke. good luck.

PostHeaderIcon Has Anyone Used Resvinatol Complete for Heart Health?

I just heard about a new antioxidant supplement called Resvinatrol Complete that I think I want to start taking. It has the antioxidant equivalent of 156 of red wine and is supposed to be 4 times stronger than pomegranate’s antioxidant capacity. Has anyone ever heard of it or used it?

I looked at the website for it, judging by the ingredients it is safe. However, I don’t see any proof that this is an improvement over standard vitamin supplements and at $30.00 for 40 pills is kind of pricey.

It won’t due any harm to give it a shot, but I would look at the cheaper alternatives first.

Also, the American Heart Association doesn’t recommend using antioxidant vitamin supplements until more complete data are available. They continue to recommend that people eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods daily from all the basic food groups.

PostHeaderIcon what is the best antioxidant vitamin? What are the benefits?

I want to take antioxidants but there are so many that I’m lost. Theres Alpha lipoic acid, grape seed, green tea, etc but I have no idea what to buy. I’m not even really sure what the benefits from each are. I’m mainly wanting something for skin and immune health. I want something that I can go purchase from a Walgreens or CVS. The only other supplement that I take right now is Biotin 5000 mg a day.

Take C 1000-2000mg per day
and E 400iu a day

and then a good multi-vitamin

PostHeaderIcon Soy Allergy and Supplement Use

There are many types of food allergies, any of which can be a very serious issue with dangerous consequences if not addressed properly. In the world of natural healing this is accomplished not just by simply eliminating from your diet what is causing the allergic reaction, especially since the cause may not be immediately known, but also by incorporating key nutrients into your diet. There have been many books written on this subject, whether you’re healing the body naturally or using them in combination with an Rx; supplements play a key role.

Front and center in the war from within is your immune system. It’s what fights off disease, but when weakened it can be an open door to many unwanted guests. Certain vitamins and minerals are used to help boost the body’s immune system. This is crucial since your immune system is already being taxed simply dealing with an allergic reaction. Some of the key players used to increase immune function within the body are Vitamins A, C, D, E, as well as Zinc.

Certain flavonoids such as Quercitin are used for their ability to lessen the severity of the body’s reaction to allergens. It’s their ability to reduce any and all inflammatory response caused by the allergen, as well as their antioxidant affect that makes flavonoids such an important nutrient.

Lets not forget about proper digestion when it comes to allergies. When the stomach lacks what it needs to properly break down foods during digestion, this undigested food can enter the blood stream causing your immune system to treat it as foreign bodies, resulting in an allergic reaction. There are many supplements used in aiding digestion, whether it’s enzymes such as bromelain, or probiotics (the good bacteria in your stomach).

Whatever the allergy there are many reasons to turn to supplements, but certain allergies can make taking supplements a bit tricky. Take soy for instance. If you suffer from a soy allergy you probably already know soy is in most all processed prepackaged foods, but it’s also important to be vigilant when taking supplements. This is primarily due to the incorporation of vitamin E in the form of mixed tocopherals, which are usually derived from soybeans. Now although I’ve been told that with the process used, there should be no soy remaining in the end product, I consistently have a reaction when vitamin E (soy) is on the label. I have seen soy in one form or another in many popular supplements; omega-3 (especially liquid form), all multivitamins, Vitamin D, and many of the probiotics on the market.

So what to do? In my case I have been able to work around this by maintaining a healthy diet first and foremost, as well as scrutinizing all labels and not just the basic ingredients; all product labeling! I have found allergy free supplements for some of the culprits mentioned above, but others I have not. I am a firm believer though, that nothing beats a healthy diet. Whole foods can be your best source of most all nutrients necessary for optimal health. Although I do take supplements, I always consult an expert in the field of natural healing. This way I get that extra boost of what my body really needs, rather than just walking blindly through my local health food store.

PostHeaderIcon What’s the best antioxidant supplement for weight loss?

Which do you think is the best? Would appreciate input on this!

An antioxidant slows or prevents the oxidation of other molecules, which helps the body fight disease and aging but doesn’t promote weight loss.

If you’re looking for natural weight loss substances, though, try green tea catechins. Green tea extract is available in a number of supplements, or you can simply drink 4 or more cups green tea or white tea a day, which is what I do.

Calcium also aids weight loss because it binds with fat. Most Americans are calcium deficient. Capsaicin, found in hot peppers and some spicy foods, boosts metabolism, and you can get this in extract form.

PostHeaderIcon Anyone taking supplements, antioxidants, immune builders during chemo or have you in the past?

I have family pushing some products (pyrimid scheme of course) that are known to be great products but 2 oncology nurses warned against it. They said it can undo the affects of the chemo. Obviously, I want to remain as helathy as possible during treatment but at the end of the day want to fight this disease completely.
Or other oncology people out ther with opinions on this?

There are conflicting opinions on this subject. I think common sense would tell you that very high doses of vitamin C or other antioxidants taken simultaneously with most common IV chemotherapy drugs might lessen the chances of chemo induced apoptosis (programmed cell death) of the cancerous cells. However I doubt that antioxidants taken a few days before or after your chemotherapy would be harmful.

My own rule of thumb is to never buy any pyramid scheme products regardless of the promises made because 45% of the money you pay goes to the person who convinces you to buy the product, 45% of the money goes to the people who convinced the other downstream sellers to purchase the product and 10% covers cost and shipping. I don’t need to pay 100.00 to have someone sell me pipe dreams and if there were any miracle cure for cancer I’m sure we would hear about it on CNN and Yahoo news. If the seller is a family member then why are they not offering to give you the product? or is their financial health more important than your physical health?

Should patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy be prescribed antioxidants?Moss RW.
Cancer Communications, Lemont, Pennsylvania 16851, USA.

In September 2005, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians published a warning by Gabriella D’Andrea, MD, against the concurrent use of antioxidants with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, several deficiencies of the CA article soon became apparent, not least the selective omission of prominent studies that contradicted the author’s conclusions. While acknowledging that only large-scale, randomized trials could provide a valid basis for therapeutic recommendations, the author sometimes relied on laboratory rather than clinical data to support her claim that harm resulted from the concurrent use of antioxidants and chemotherapy. She also sometimes extrapolated from chemoprevention studies rather than those on the concurrent use of antioxidants per se. The article overstated the degree to which the laboratory data diverged in regard to the safety and efficacy of antioxidant therapy: in fact, the preponderance of data suggests a synergistic or at least harmless effect with most high-dose dietary antioxidants and chemotherapy. The practical recommendations made in the article to avoid the general class of antioxidants during chemotherapy are inconsistent, in that if antioxidants were truly a threat to the efficacy of standard therapy, antioxidant-rich foods, especially fruits and vegetables, ought also be proscribed during treatment. Yet no such recommendation is made. Furthermore, the wide-scale use by both medical and radiation oncologists of synthetic antioxidants (eg, amifostine) to control the adverse effects of cytotoxic treatments is similarly overlooked. In sum, this CA article is incomplete: there is far more information available regarding antioxidant supplements as an appropriate adjunctive cancer therapy than is acknowledged. Patients would be well advised to seek the opinion of physicians who are adequately trained and experienced in the intersection of 2 complex fields, that is, chemotherapeutics and nutritional oncology. Physicians whose goal is comprehensive cancer therapy should refer their patients to qualified integrative practitioners who have such training and expertise to guide patients. A blanket rejection of the concurrent use of antioxidants with chemotherapy is not justified by the preponderance of evidence at this time and serves neither the scientific community nor cancer patients.

PostHeaderIcon What are the side effects of consuming SPIRULINA tablets , as a dietary supplement .?

I take one tablet daily [ 400 mg ] for getting antioxidants , vitamin supplement etc..

As it is claimed that it is 100% natural [ made from seaweeds ] with no side effects, what is the truth.
Is there any systematic studies done on it.

What are the FDA recommedations on it in various countries

what are the side effects

Spirulina are free-floating filamentous cyanobacteria characterized by cylindrical, multicellular trichomes in an open left-hand helix. Spirulina occurs naturally in tropical and subtropical lakes with high pH and high concentrations of carbonate and bicarbonate.
Nutrients in spirulina:
Protein
Spirulina contains unusually high amounts of protein, between 55 and 77% by dry weight, depending upon the source. It is a complete protein, containing all essential amino acids, however superior to all standard plant protein, such as that from legumes

Essential Fatty Acids

Spirulina is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and also provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (AA).

Vitamins: Spirulina contains vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), B12 (cyanocobalamin), vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E.

Minerals
Spirulina is a rich source of potassium, and also contains calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, and zinc.

Photosynthetic Pigments
Spirulina contains many pigments including chlorophyll-a, xanthophyll, beta-carotene, echinenone, myxoxanthophyll, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, diatoxanthin, 3′-hydroxyechinenone, beta-cryptoxanthin, oscillaxanthin, plus the phycobiliproteins c-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin.

Evidence of health and healing effects: Advocates frequently overstate their claims of Spirulina’s health and healing properties, though often there is research upon which such claims are based. Conversely, health food detractors often dismiss all such claims without acknowledging existing research. Two online publications exemplify these opposing positions, respectively: Superfoods For Optimum Health: Chlorella and Spirulina, and Wellness Letter on Blue Green Algae. Many positive claims are based on research done on individual nutrients that Spirulina contains, such as GLA, various antioxidants, etc., rather than on direct research using Spirulina. What follows is research on the health and healing effects of Spirulina. In vitro research may suggest the possibility of similar results in humans, but cannot be taken as proof of human effects. Animal research provides stronger evidence, but again, does not represent proof of similar effects in humans. The results of Clinical trials are the best evidence available.

In vitro research
Spirulina extract inhibits HIV replication in human T-cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and Langerhans cells.

Animal research
Spirulina helps prevent heart damage caused by chemotherapy using Doxorubicin, without interfering with its anti-tumor activity. Spirulina reduces the severity of strokes and improves recovery of movement after a stroke;reverses age-related declines in memory and learning; and prevents and treats hay fever.

Clinical trials
Spirulina is effective for the clinical improvement of melanosis and keratosis due to chronic arsenic poisoning;improves weight-gain and corrects anemia in both HIV-infected and HIV-negative undernourished children;and protects against hay fever.

Recognising the inherent potential of the micro-alage Spirulina (Spirulina Platensis) to counter malnutrition and its severe negative impacts at multiple levels of the society especially in the developing and Least Developed Countries (LDC), the international community affirmed its conviction by joining hands to form the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition, IIMSAM.

Spirulina because of its easy accessibility, affordability and capability to assimilate in the human body is a potent tool, not only to counter and combat malnutrition but also to stem the loss of human lives especially of children and enrich human capital.
